How do I set my hunting ground's boundary?

Last updated
The boundary is the perimeter of your hunting ground, drawn on the map. It appears on top of the maps and triggers the out-of-bounds alert during a live hunt. On mobile, it also updates the hunting ground's area in hectares. You need the **Manage the boundary** permission. The administrator and the managers always have it. A syndicate member or a member only has it if the administrator or a manager grants that permission to their role (it then applies to every syndicate member, or to every member): the **Edit the hunting ground** permission isn't enough. ## On mobile ### Draw the perimeter 1. **Hunting grounds** tab, tap the hunting ground. 2. "Hunting ground" section, tap **Boundary**. 3. Tap the "Hunting ground boundary" line. The map opens almost full screen. 4. If nothing is drawn yet, a welcome card offers three ways to start: **By parcels** (the most accurate), **With the lasso** and **By hand**. Tap the one you like, or close the welcome card to start with parcels. 5. Draw with one of the three tools at the bottom: **Parcels**, **Lasso** or **Draw**. You can combine them and switch at any time. 6. Tap **Save**. The hunting ground's area is updated if you also have the **Edit the hunting ground** permission. Without it, the outline is saved but the area stays unchanged. ### Read the screen - At the top centre: the area of the outline in hectares, then "In a single piece" or "In 3 pieces" ("No outline" if the map is empty). As soon as you change the outline, the difference from when you opened it shows live: green if the hunting ground grows, red if it shrinks. - The round button at the top right opens the "Base map" menu: **Satellite** or **IGN plan** for the base map, **Cadastre lines** to show or hide them, **Smooth the boundary** and **Clear the whole outline**. - Cadastre lines show up by themselves with **Parcels** and **Lasso**, and are hidden with **Draw**. If you set them by hand in the menu, your choice holds until you close the map. - The location button, at the bottom right, centres the map on you. ### Add or remove parcels With the **Parcels** tool, tap a parcel to add it. Tap it again to remove it. A message at the bottom confirms the action and the change in area, with an **Undo** button. If you tap a spot with no parcel, the message "No parcel here" appears. To go faster, pick the **Lasso** tool, choose **Add** or **Remove**, then draw around the area with your finger. The map stays locked while you draw. - **Add** takes every cadastre parcel inside the area you drew around. - **Remove** takes the area you drew around out of the outline, without touching the rest. ### Draw by hand 1. Choose the **Draw** tool. A crosshair appears in the centre of the map. 2. Move the map to bring the crosshair onto a corner of the hunting ground, then tap **Add the point**. Repeat for each corner. 3. From 3 points, tap **Close the outline**. The area is added to the perimeter. Each area you draw is added to what already exists. When the perimeter is a single area with no hole and at most 50 corners (as with a small hunting ground drawn by hand), its corners show with **Draw**: drag a corner to move it, tap it to remove it. At least 3 always remain. ### Smooth the hunting ground 1. **Hunting grounds** tab, tap the hunting ground, "Hunting ground" section, **Boundary**, then the "Hunting ground boundary" line. The map opens. 2. When tracks or ditches cut across the outline, a gold banner appears at the bottom: "Tracks or ditches cut across your hunting ground". Tap **Smooth**. 3. Without the banner, tap the round button at the top right, which opens the "Base map" menu, then **Smooth the boundary**. 4. During the calculation, the hint line reads "Smoothing in progress, this can take up to a minute". The "Boundary smoothed" message confirms the result. 5. To keep the result, tap **Save**. To go back, tap the round **Undo** button. If there is nothing to fill, the "Nothing to smooth" message appears. If the land registry doesn't respond, the "Cadastre unavailable, try again" message appears and nothing changes. ### Undo, discard, save - The round **Undo** button, to the left of the hint line, steps back one change at a time, down to the state when you opened the map. - As soon as the outline differs from the one you opened, a **Discard** / **Save** bar appears at the bottom. **Discard** puts the outline back as it was on opening and leaves the map open. If you leave the map with changes in progress, you are asked "Discard the changes?". - Nothing is saved until you tap **Save**. ### Clear or delete the boundary 1. Tap the round button at the top right, which opens the "Base map" menu, then **Clear the whole outline**. The outline disappears from the map, but the saved perimeter doesn't change yet. 2. The button at the bottom becomes **Delete the outline**. Tap it, then confirm "Delete the outline?". To go back before you confirm, tap **Undo** or **Discard**. ## On the web ### Draw the perimeter 1. Click **Hunting grounds** in the menu, then the hunting ground. 2. In the hunting ground menu, click **Settings**. 3. In the **Hunting ground boundary** block, click **Define** (or **Edit** if a perimeter exists). The map opens full screen. 4. Draw the perimeter with the **Draw**, **Wand** and **Lasso** tools. Once a perimeter is drawn, **Remove** and **Clear** also appear. You can combine them. 5. Click **Save**, at the bottom of the map. If you close the map without saving, the "Leave without saving?" window warns you. On the web, saving the perimeter doesn't change the **Area (Ha)** field in the Settings: you still enter it by hand. ### The web tools - **Draw** (**Add an area** when a perimeter exists): click to place the corners. Double-click, come back to the first point, or click **Finish** to close the area. - **Wand**: click a parcel to add it. Click again on a parcel already taken to remove it. - **Lasso**: draw around several parcels at once to add them. - **Remove** (shown only when a perimeter exists): draw around parcels of the perimeter to take them out, without touching the rest. - **Cadastre**: shows the parcel limits to help you find your way. - **Smooth the hunting ground** (shown only when a perimeter exists): fills in the tracks and small streams that cut across the hunting ground. The steps are in "Smooth the hunting ground", below. - **Clear** (shown only when a perimeter exists): removes the whole outline from the map, after confirmation. The hunting ground perimeter is only deleted after a click on **Save**. - The "Search for an address…" field and the **Satellite view** (or **Plan view**) button help you get your bearings. As soon as a perimeter is drawn, its calculated area and its number of corners show at the top left of the map. This box is hidden on a small screen. ### Smooth the hunting ground 1. Click **Hunting grounds** in the menu, then the hunting ground, then **Settings**. 2. In the **Hunting ground boundary** block, click **Edit**. The map opens full screen. 3. In the map toolbar, click **Smooth the hunting ground**. The button only appears once a perimeter is drawn. When tracks or gaps cut across the hunting ground, it is highlighted, with the message "Tracks or gaps cut across your hunting ground.". 4. During the calculation, the message "This can take up to a minute on a large hunting ground." appears. The "Hunting ground smoothed" message confirms the result. 5. To keep the result, click **Save**. To go back, click **Undo smoothing**, which replaces the button as long as you don't change the outline. If there is nothing to fill, the message "Nothing to smooth: no track or stream cuts across the hunting ground." appears. If the land registry doesn't respond, the message "Cadastre unavailable, try again in a moment." appears and nothing changes. ### Show the boundary on a map 1. Open a map in the map editor. 2. Click **Layers**. 3. "Display" section, turn on **Hunting ground boundary**. It is hidden by default. ## A hunting ground in several pieces On the web and on mobile alike, each new area is added to the existing perimeter instead of replacing it. On mobile, a perimeter made of several parcels or areas, or of an area with a hole in it, opens and is edited with **Parcels** and **Lasso**, without losing anything. The number of pieces shows at the top of the screen ("In 3 pieces"). Only moving corners needs a perimeter of a single area with no hole. For every other case, use the **Parcels**, **Lasso** and **Draw** tools. ## Good to know - When you draw from the cadastre, roads, tracks and small streams have no parcel. They leave gaps in the outline, and the "Left the hunting ground" alert can go off when you cross a track in the middle of your hunting ground. - **Smooth the hunting ground** fills these narrow strips, up to 30 m wide, when they lie between parts of your hunting ground. It never takes a neighbour's parcel. Nothing is saved until you click or tap **Save**. On mobile, the live map shows the perimeter by default: it is the **Hunting ground boundary** layer in the live layers. During a live hunt on the mobile app, a participant who leaves the perimeter sees the "You have left the hunting ground" banner and their phone vibrates. The vibration repeats every 10 seconds for as long as they stay outside, and a different vibration signals their return. With the app in the background, they get a "Left the hunting ground" notification. The alert relies on the phone's position, which is given as a guide only. ## Troubleshooting - "I can't see Boundary on mobile": the entry is for the administrator, the managers, and syndicate members or members who have the **Manage the boundary** permission. Ask the administrator or a manager for it. - "I don't have the Hunting ground boundary block on the web": you don't have the **Manage the boundary** permission on this hunting ground. - "I can't see the Save bar" (on mobile): it only appears once the outline has changed since you opened the map. Add or remove a parcel and it shows. - "The Close the outline button is greyed out" (on mobile): with the **Draw** tool, you need at least 3 points. Tap **Add the point** to place more. - "No parcel here" or "Cadastre unavailable, try again" (on mobile): the spot you tapped is on no parcel, or the cadastre isn't answering right now. Aim at a parcel, or try again in a moment. The **Draw** tool works without the cadastre. - "I can't see the cadastre lines" (on mobile): they are hidden with the **Draw** tool. Switch to **Parcels** or **Lasso**, or tap the round button at the top right, which opens the "Base map" menu, then **Cadastre lines**. - "I can't move the corners" (on mobile): they only show with the **Draw** tool, and only if the perimeter is a single area with no hole and at most 50 corners. - "I can't see the boundary on my map" (on the web): in the map editor, click **Layers**, then turn on **Hunting ground boundary**. - "I can't see the boundary on my map" (on mobile): the map editor shows the perimeter as soon as it is drawn, with no setting to turn on. Open **Boundary**: the "Hunting ground boundary" line reads "no area drawn" for as long as no perimeter is saved. Draw it then. - "The out-of-bounds alert does not fire": it works during a live hunt on the mobile app, once the perimeter is drawn. In the live layers, check that **Out-of-bounds alert** is turned on. It is on by default, but anyone can turn it off. ## See also - [How do I set up a hunting ground?](article:how-do-i-set-up-a-hunting-ground) - [How do I create a map?](article:how-do-i-create-a-map) - [How do I start a live hunt?](article:how-do-i-start-a-live-hunt)
