How do I create a map?

Last updated
Maps let you draw your hunting ground (zones, lines, points of interest) to prepare hunts and share them. To create or edit a map, you must be a member of the hunting ground with the "Manage maps" permission. Without it, you can only view maps (**View** on mobile, **View map** on the web). There is an exception for the live published map of a hunt: see "Good to know". **Watch the video: the concept of maps (1 min 23, in French)** https://youtu.be/-2POnEAfE14 ## On mobile ### Create a hunting ground map 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. Tap **+** at the top right, enter the name, then tap **Create**. 3. Tap **Edit** on the map to open the editor. The toolbar offers **Zone**, **Draw**, **POI**, **Layers**, **Measure**, **Legend**, **Capture** and **Help**. ### Draw a zone 1. Tap **Zone**, then choose **Free**, **Wand** or **Lasso**. 2. In **Free** or **Lasso**, move the map to aim with the crosshair, tap **+** to place each point, then tap **Confirm**. 3. In **Wand**, tap each parcel with your finger: it is added straight away to the map, with no further step. 4. In **Free** only, set **Name (optional)**, **Colour**, **Hatching (stripes)** and **Opacity**, then tap **Add**. In **Lasso**, **Confirm** adds the enclosed parcels directly, with no style settings. In **Wand** or **Lasso**, **Add** and **Remove** add or remove parcels. When adding, choose **Single zone** (merged parcels) or **Zone by parcel** (one zone per parcel). The **Avoid overlaps** toggle prevents reusing a parcel that is already in a zone. ### Draw a line, arrow, circle, text or point 1. Tap **Draw**, then **Circle**, **Line**, **Arrow** or **Text**. For a point of interest, tap **POI**. 2. For a line or arrow, place each point with **+**, then tap **Confirm**. For a circle, text or POI, tap **Place here**. 3. Set the style (**Colour**, **Thickness**, **Radius** depending on the element), then tap **Add**. To measure a distance, tap **Measure**, place the points with **+**, then tap **Finish**. ### Merge zones 1. Tap a zone, then **Merge zones**. 2. Tap the other zones to group together (at least two zones in total), then **Merge (N)**, N being the number of zones chosen. 3. Tap **Done** to leave this mode. ### Hide a stand on a specific map 1. Open the map in the editor. 2. Tap the stand, then **Hide on this map**. The stand disappears from this map only. Other maps are unchanged. On mobile, a hidden stand no longer appears on the map and can't be tapped. To show it again, open the map on the web, click **Stands** in the dock, then turn the stand's visibility toggle back on. ### Rename or delete a hunting ground map Both actions require the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. To rename, tap **Edit** on the map, then the pencil **Rename map** at the top of the editor. Enter the **Name**, then tap **Rename**. 3. To delete, tap the map's bin icon, then confirm in "Delete this map?". ### Share a map Sharing requires the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. Tap the map's share icon. The "Share map" sheet opens. 3. Choose the sharing level: **Hunting ground members**, **Signed-in users** or **Public**. The phone's share menu opens with the link. 4. To stop sharing by link, tap **Revoke the link**. The "Link revoked" message appears. ### Choose what the link of a hunting ground map shows The "Visible on the link" block appears with the **Signed-in users** and **Public** levels, not with **Hunting ground members**. 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. Tap the map's share icon, then choose **Signed-in users** or **Public**. The "Visible on the link" block appears in the "Share map" sheet. 3. In the "Visible on the link" block, turn on **Shooting posts** to show the name, number, position and sector of each stand. Turn on **Meeting point** to show the hunting ground's meeting point. 4. Turn off a toggle to hide the item on the link. A shooting post or a meeting point only appears on the link if its toggle is on. These two toggles are saved in the map's legend. The **Hunting ground boundary** line has no toggle: it shows "Visible" or "Hidden" depending on the map's **Hunting ground boundary** option, which is set on the web. ### Duplicate a map 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. Tap the map's copy icon. The "Duplicate map" sheet opens. 3. Enter the name of the copy, then turn on the toggles for the **Items to copy**: Zones, POI, Text, Items (line, arrow, circle), Legend. 4. Tap **Duplicate**. ### Organiser: create a map for a single hunt To create a hunt map or import one from the hunting ground, you must be able to edit the hunt and have the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunt, then tap **Manage**. 2. In the "Map & hunting ground" section, tap **Map**. 3. To create a map, tap **+** at the top right, enter the name in the "New map" window, then tap **Create**. 4. To reuse a hunting ground map, tap **Import from hunting ground**. ### Organiser: publish, make visible or delete a hunt map **Publish live** requires being able to edit the hunt. Making a map visible to participants and deleting it also require the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunt, tap **Manage**, then **Map** in the "Map & hunting ground" section. 2. Long-press the map. A menu opens. 3. Tap **Publish live** to show it in the hunt's live, or **Remove from live** if it is already there. 4. Tap **Make visible to participants**, or **Make private** if it is already visible. 5. Tap **Delete** to remove the map from the hunt. The download icon at the top prepares the area for offline use. Available from version 4.2.5 of the app. From version 4.2.9 of the app, a hunt map opens first in view mode, even for the organiser. Tap **Edit** at the top of the screen to edit it. ## On the web ### Create a hunting ground map 1. **Hunting grounds** menu, open your hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click **New map** (or **Create your first template** on a hunting ground with no map). 3. Enter the **Map name** (for example "North driven hunt"), then click **Create**. 4. Click **Edit map**. The tool dock offers **Zone**, **Draw**, **POI**, **Measure**, **Layers**, **Stands** and **Legend**. The **Drive** button is added, between **Layers** and **Stands**, with the "Manage maps" permission. **Watch the video: the map screen (2 min 48, in French)** https://youtu.be/108VtNzjg0A ### Draw a zone 1. Click **Zone**, then choose **Free point**, **Wand** or **Lasso**. 2. Before drawing, set **Colour**, **Fill opacity** and **Hatching (stripes)**. 3. In **Free point**, click each corner of the outline. Close by clicking the first point, or press Enter after at least three points. 4. In **Wand**, click a cadastral parcel to add it. In **Lasso**, surround several parcels with a single stroke. Hold Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) to move the map without drawing. 5. In **Free point**, finish with **Close / Finish**. In **Wand** and **Lasso**, the zone is added as soon as you click or draw: there is nothing to finish. To name an element right after drawing it: 1. In the right panel next to the dock, fill in **Name**. 2. Click **Save**. To rename an existing zone: 1. Click the zone. A small menu opens. 2. Click **Rename**. The "Zone name" window opens. 3. Enter the name, then click **Confirm**. **Watch the video: draw your zones with the cadastre (5 min 44, in French)** https://youtu.be/ArZZi3jgz6w ### Draw other elements 1. Click **Draw**, then **Circle**, **Line**, **Arrow** or **Text**. For a point of interest, click **POI**, choose an icon from the palette, then click on the map where you want it. 2. For a circle, click the centre, then move the mouse and click to fix the radius. 3. For a line or arrow, set **Line thickness**, then draw. 4. For a line or arrow, finish with **Close / Finish**. **Watch the video: circles and shooting lines (4 min 04, in French)** https://youtu.be/RlhFgdEm5LU **Watch the video: points of interest and measuring (3 min 16, in French)** https://youtu.be/XH4Sg9F94nE **Watch the video: arrows, texts and history (2 min 18, in French)** https://youtu.be/N8SGqt0-EpI ### Merge zones 1. Click **Zone**, then **Merge zones**. 2. Click the zones to group together on the map, even if separated by a road. 3. Click **Merge**. **Watch the video: merge and customise zones (2 min 25, in French)** https://youtu.be/3hc6zBLLfPw ### Capture or export the map #### Capture an image 1. Click **Capture**, at the top right. 2. Choose **WebP image** or **High-res PNG**. The capture happens directly, with no extra window. #### Export to PDF, GPX or KML 1. Click **Capture**, at the top right. 2. Choose **PDF export**: the "Print & export" window opens. 3. Set the **Format** and orientation, then click **Export as PDF**. The **GPX** and **KML** buttons in the same window export the map data. To keep only part of the map, tick **Choose area** in this menu, then choose the capture type. Move or resize the frame, then click **Capture**. For a PDF, the frame keeps the page shape. **Watch the video: export and print the map (2 min 31, in French)** https://youtu.be/NAFgZwOQhtE ### Draw an elevation profile 1. In the dock, click **Layers**. 2. Expand the "Terrain" section, then click **Elevation profile**. 3. Click several points on the map. 4. Click **Finish drawing**, or press Enter. A profile has at most 50 points. You get the altitude/distance chart, elevation gains, slopes and an **Export GeoJSON** button. Altitudes come from the IGN (French national mapping agency) RGE ALTI dataset. The elevation profile exists only on the web. ### Import data 1. Click **Hunting grounds**, open the hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click **Import data**. 3. Choose the **File** tab (GeoJSON, GPX, KML, CSV, XLSX), **Table** (pasted table) or **Point** (point entered by its coordinates), then follow the steps in the window. Import exists only on the web. ### Hide a stand on a specific map 1. Open the map in the editor, then click **Stands** in the dock. 2. Turn off the stand's visibility toggle (its tooltip is "Visible on this map"). The stand disappears from this map only. Other maps are unchanged. ### Rename or delete a hunting ground map Both actions require the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Click **Hunting grounds**, open the hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Hover over the map: the **Rename**, **Duplicate** and **Delete** icons appear at the top right of the tile. 3. To rename, click **Rename**. The "Rename map" window opens. Enter the **Map name**, then click **Save**. 4. To delete, click **Delete**, then confirm with **Confirm**. ### Share a map Sharing requires the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Click **Hunting grounds**, open the hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click the map's **Share** icon (tooltip on hover). The "Share map" window opens. 3. Choose the level: **Hunting ground members**, **Signed-in users** or **Public**. Click **Copy** to copy the link: the "Link copied" message appears. 4. To stop sharing by link, click **Revoke the link**. The "Link revoked" message appears. ### Choose what the link of a hunting ground map shows The "Visible on the link" block appears with the **Signed-in users** and **Public** levels, not with **Hunting ground members**. 1. Click **Hunting grounds**, open the hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click the map's **Share** icon, then choose **Signed-in users** or **Public**. The "Visible on the link" block appears in the "Share map" window. 3. In the "Visible on the link" block, turn on the **Shooting posts** toggle to show the name, number, position and sector of each stand. Turn on **Meeting point** to show the hunting ground's meeting point. 4. Turn off a toggle to hide the item on the link. A shooting post or a meeting point only appears on the link if its toggle is on. These two toggles are saved in the map's legend. The **Hunting ground boundary** line has no toggle: it shows "Visible" or "Hidden" depending on the map's **Hunting ground boundary** option in **Layers**. ### Duplicate a map 1. Click **Hunting grounds**, open the hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click the map's **Duplicate** icon (tooltip on hover). The "Duplicate map" window opens. 3. Enter the name of the copy and tick the **Items to copy**, then click **Duplicate**. ### Organiser: create a map for a single hunt To create a hunt map or import one from the hunting ground, you must be able to edit the hunt and have the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunt, then click **Manage the event**. 2. Click **Interactive maps**. 3. To create a map, click **New map**, enter the name, then click **Create**. 4. To reuse a hunting ground map, click **Import from hunting ground**, then in the "Import a map" window, click the map you want. 5. On the map tile, click **Edit map** to open it in the editor. ### Organiser: publish, make visible, duplicate or delete a hunt map **Publish live** requires being able to edit the hunt. Making a map visible to participants, duplicating it and deleting it also require the "Manage maps" permission. 1. Open the hunt, click **Manage the event**, then **Interactive maps**. 2. On the map you want, turn on **Publish live** to show it in the hunt's live. A "LIVE MAP" badge marks the published map. Turn off the toggle to remove it from live. 3. Turn on **Visible to participants** so they can view it from their space. Turn off the toggle to make it private. 4. Hover over the map: the **Duplicate** and **Delete** icons appear at the top right of the tile. To delete, click **Delete**, then confirm with **Confirm**. ## Good to know - **Layers**: map or satellite base layer, **Cadastre**, zone names, stands, scale and North. The **Internet dead zones** and **Call/SMS dead zones** layers, which show where mobile signal is missing, are described in a separate article. The base layer, cadastre, zone names and areas you set are saved with the map, on the web and on mobile: a public link shows it with the same display. On the web, the **Hunting ground boundary** option is also saved. On mobile, the **Imagery year** of the satellite base layer is also saved. - **Search**: the editor's search field finds a stand, an address or GPS coordinates (for example 48.85, 2.35). On the web, the marker placed offers **Create a POI here**, and **Create a stand here** if you have the "Manage stands" permission. - **Items**: in the top bar, this button (tooltip "Items") lists everything on the map, by type. Clicking zooms to the element and opens it. - **Live published map of a hunt**: the hunt creator, the administrator or a manager of the hunting ground, and anyone with the **Edit all events** permission, can edit the elements of this map (zones, drawings, points of interest) without the "Manage maps" permission. The map name, legend and sharing to participants still require this permission: without it, those buttons are hidden. A layer or legend change then stays on your screen and isn't saved with the map. - Several elements in the same place: clicking or tapping opens a small menu to choose which one to open. On mobile, a map opened in read-only mode opens the first element directly, with no menu. ## Maps and drives A map isn't a drive: it is a background (zones, boundaries, points of interest) that can serve several drives, with different stands. - On the web, the **Drive** button in the dock lists the drives that use a hunting ground map. It appears with the "Manage maps" permission. - On mobile, a banner at the top of the editor shows these drives and offers "Create a drive from this map". - Creating or editing a drive also requires the "Manage stands" permission. - On a hunt map, **Drive** (web) or "Hunt drives" (mobile) lists the day's drives: **Use this map** assigns it to a drive, **Remove** removes it. **Copy into the hunting ground's maps** makes a copy in the hunting ground, without changing the hunt map. This button requires the "Manage maps" permission. ## If something goes wrong - "Shooting posts don't appear on the shared link": the **Shooting posts** toggle in the "Visible on the link" block is off. Turn it on in the "Share map" window or sheet. - "I don't see the Visible on the link block": it only appears with the **Signed-in users** and **Public** levels. Choose one of them. - "I don't see the New map button": you don't have the "Manage maps" permission on this hunting ground. - "I don't see Create a drive from this map" (mobile): this button appears only on hunting ground maps and requires the "Manage stands" permission. On a hunt map, first copy it into the hunting ground's maps. Without the "Manage stands" permission, ask the administrator or a manager of the hunting ground. - "I can edit my hunt map, but I can't rename it, or open the legend": those settings require the "Manage maps" permission. Ask the administrator or a manager of the hunting ground. - "I don't see New drive" (web): the button is in the **Drive** panel in the dock and appears only with the "Manage stands" permission. Without it, the panel lists drives but you can't create one. - "This parcel is already covered by a zone" (web, in Wand; the message goes on to suggest unticking "Avoid overlaps"): the parcel is already part of a zone. To take it anyway, untick **Avoid overlaps**. - "These parcels are already covered by a zone" (web, in Lasso): the enclosed parcels are already part of a zone. To take them anyway, untick **Avoid overlaps**. - "Parcel already covered." (mobile): the parcel is already part of a zone. To take it anyway, turn off **Avoid overlaps**. - "Altitudes unavailable." (elevation profile): try again with the **Try again** button. If the message "Partial profile: altitude unavailable on part of the line." appears, the chart covers only part of the line. - "The Capture button stays greyed out": the legend doesn't fit in the chosen frame. Enlarge the frame. - "I can't find import on mobile": file import exists only on the web. ## More on video Extracts from the webinar on maps, by topic. **Watch the video: import your data (1 min 07, in French)** https://youtu.be/yge_dsD923U **Watch the video: share a map (1 min 04, in French)** https://youtu.be/GUxj4jfC__E **Watch the video: layers and base maps (3 min 36, in French)** https://youtu.be/sChq-b01P_I **Watch the video: relief, slopes and elevation profile (4 min 17, in French)** https://youtu.be/L1AODh5x_7s **Watch the video: buildings, roads, water and power lines (4 min 16, in French)** https://youtu.be/b8HebI1wK_0 **Watch the video: the legend (1 min 52, in French)** https://youtu.be/zWBy7PGJ0rU **Watch the video: protected areas (parks, reserves, Natura 2000) (1 min 10, in French)** https://youtu.be/AoMXUQbr34k ## See also - [How do I place stands?](article:how-do-i-place-stands) - [How do I create drives for my hunting ground?](article:how-do-i-create-drives-for-my-hunting-ground) - [How do I see dead zones (no signal) on a map?](article:how-do-i-see-dead-zones-no-signal-on-a-map) - [How do I project a map during the briefing?](article:how-do-i-project-a-map-during-the-briefing)
