How do I see dead zones (no signal) on a map?

Last updated
The "Dead zones" layers mark the places on your map where phones have no signal. They help you prepare a hunt: find out where signal is missing before you send people there. You must be able to edit the map. The administrator and managers of the hunting ground can edit all the hunting ground's maps, including hunt maps. A member can also receive the "Manage maps" permission in the hunting ground permissions. The creator of a hunt, or a member with the "Edit all events" permission, can edit that hunt's live published map. Without permission to edit it, the map opens in read-only mode and the layers aren't shown. ## On mobile ### For a hunting ground map 1. Open the hunting ground, then **Maps**. 2. Tap **Edit** on the map. 3. In the bottom toolbar, tap **Layers**. 4. Scroll down to the "CONTEXT" section (the title is shown in capitals). 5. Turn on the **Internet dead zones** toggle, the **Call/SMS dead zones** toggle, or both. ### For a hunt map 1. Open the hunt, then tap **Manage**. 2. In the "Map & hunting ground" section, tap **Map**. 3. Tap the map to open it. 4. Tap **Edit** at the top of the screen. A hunt map opens first in view mode, with no toolbar. 5. In the bottom toolbar, tap **Layers**. 6. Scroll down to the "CONTEXT" section (the title is shown in capitals). 7. Turn on the **Internet dead zones** toggle, the **Call/SMS dead zones** toggle, or both. The coloured zones appear on the map, and the date of the data is shown below the toggle. ## On the web ### For a hunting ground map 1. **Hunting grounds** menu, open your hunting ground, **Maps** tab. 2. Click **Edit map**. 3. In the left dock (at the bottom of the screen on a narrow window), click **Layers**. 4. Expand the "Context" section. 5. Turn on the **Internet dead zones** toggle, the **Call/SMS dead zones** toggle, or both. ### For a hunt map 1. **Hunting grounds** menu, open your hunting ground, **Hunts** tab. 2. Click **Manage** on the hunt. On a draft hunt, the button is called **Complete**; on an ended hunt, **Report**; on a cancelled hunt, **View**. From the hunt page, the **Manage the event** button leads to the same place. 3. In the hunt menu, click **Interactive maps**. 4. Click **Edit map** on the map you want. 5. In the left dock (at the bottom of the screen on a narrow window), click **Layers**. 6. Expand the "Context" section. 7. Turn on the **Internet dead zones** toggle, the **Call/SMS dead zones** toggle, or both. On the web, there is no **Edit** button to click: the editor opens straight away. The hunt creator can only edit the live published map. On another hunt map, the dock doesn't appear without the "Manage maps" permission. The **?** button next to a layer's name recalls what it shows and from which zoom level it appears. ## The two layers A dead zone is a place where no carrier (Orange, SFR, Bouygues, Free) provides the service. - **Internet dead zones**, in red: no 3G or 4G mobile data. - **Call/SMS dead zones**, in orange: unable to call or send an SMS. Grey means no data is available (outside mainland France). It doesn't mean "no signal". ## Good to know - The data comes from Arcep (the French telecoms regulator) coverage maps. A new edition is published every quarter and replaces the previous one automatically. A line below the layer gives the data date, for example "Theoretical Arcep map as of 30 June 2026. In grey: no data (outside France)." - The map is theoretical. Under dense forest or at the bottom of a valley, actual signal may be weaker than shown. A place that isn't coloured is therefore not guaranteed to have coverage. - The layers appear only from zoom level 8. Further out, the layer shows "Zoom in to display this layer." on the web and "Zoom in" on mobile. - For a live-tracked hunt, these layers show you where positions won't come through in real time. In an Internet dead zone, the phone stores positions and sends them as soon as signal returns: they are then shown with a delay. - They also tell you where calls and SMS won't work. This is useful before placing an isolated stand, or to warn hunters about a sector where they won't be reachable. - Live tracking positions are for information only. The decision to shoot remains the shooter's. ## If something goes wrong - "Data unavailable" on the web, "Unavail." on mobile: the data failed to load. On the web, move the map slightly to try again. On mobile, turn the layer off and back on; the message "Data unavailable. Turn the layer off and back on to try again." reminds you below the toggle. - "I don't see any colour": zoom in, then check you are in mainland France. If there is no dead zone at that location, nothing is coloured. - "I don't see the Layers button on mobile": the toolbar doesn't appear on a map opened in read-only mode. Either you don't have permission to edit this map, or it is a hunt map opened in view mode: tap **Edit** at the top of the screen. - "I don't see the Layers dock on the web": the dock doesn't appear on a map in read-only mode, meaning you don't have permission to edit this map. On a hunt map, you can edit it if it is the live published map and you have permission to edit the hunt, or if you have the "Manage maps" permission. Otherwise, ask the administrator or a manager of the hunting ground for that permission. ## See also - [How do I create a map?](article:how-do-i-create-a-map) - [How do I start a live hunt?](article:how-do-i-start-a-live-hunt) - [How do I download a map offline?](article:how-do-i-download-a-map-offline)
